Roles of a Director (Barrington)

The role of the director is to sets the tone of the movie and interprets the script as he/she sees it. He/she typically sees the story as a whole and gives it his/her own stamp. He/she instructs the actors on how to say their lines, their facial expressions and tone. Anything that happens on a movie set is subject to the approval of the director. The final product is the direct result of decisions made by the director.
Some of the great directors to come out of Hollywood are: Charlie Chaplin,Quentin Tarantino,Steven Spielberg,Martin Scorsese are a few of the best. The director also plays a key role in post-production. He or she works with the editor to ensure that the emotions of the scene and the close upsmid-shots and wide or long shots appropriately reflect which character is driving the narrative. The director also advises on the (colour) grading of the final images, adding warmth or frigidity to the composition of the shots to reflect the emotional subtext of the character or environment. The director also participates and directs the sound mix and musical composition of the film. In the subsequent promotion of the finished film, if a director is well known his name and image is used to promote the film alongside the stars of the film, but having an image is not the primary function of a director, as they are judged by their creative talent and ability to run a production. It is the second most powerful "behind the scenes" profession in the movie industry, after the producer, but the director traditionally has complete control "on the floor". One of the directors I enjoy watching the work of is Quentin Tarantino (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK2vgodeONg) he is a unique director and has made many iconic films, when he is on set he doesn't just sit on a chair and look at the monitor like other directors he gets up and moves about and even something gets behind the camera himself and is very involved in the process, I too like to get involved with making the film by filming my self and making sure its the way I want it to be. Overall I think the role of the director is one of the most important roles when making a film and should be done by someone who has a clear idea of what they want and can tell people what to do so he gets the best out of a film and must be able to work with others and get the most out of them.

Music Poster (Lucy)

Rupert Murdock (Lucy's work)

Dear MP I am writing this email to complain that Rupert Murdoch should not be allowed to own all of BSkyB because he is not a trust worthy individual as he proved by the phone hacking scandal of The News of the World. The bid was referred to Ofcom means that there were concerns about the effect it would have on media ownership because Rupert will have control over roughly 51% British media because News Corp when combined with Sky, would account for a 22% "share of reference" for British news and that the combined company would reach 51% of all Britons with its news each week. Also Ofcom’s rules on cross media ownership say that a news paper owner can't own TV so why is Murdoch a exception? He also owns Fox news in US which has been known for being bias and theres nothing that says he wont do it with everything else. Mr Murdoch told the Leveson Inquiry that the then prime minister(Gordon Brown) made an angry call to him in September 2009 after the Sun dropped Labour but records released by the Cabinet Office confirm his claim that he did not call Rupert Murdoch to declare "war" on News Corp. This all shows that Rupert has too much power and that he needs to be kept under control because he doesn't seem to be trust worthy and has a hunger for power and overall I think it would be very bad if he wins the bid for BSkyB.

Frankie Boyle Statement (Lucy)

Statement from Channel Four:

Frankie Boyle is a comedian who makes all kind of jokes about people and everyone finds him funny. Frankie loves pushing his boundaries; he likes to explore new areas and see how they work for him and how the crowed react to it.

Frankie said a joke about Harvey Price (Kate Price a.k.a Jordan’s disabled son) in which he said “I have a feeling that Jordan married a cage fighter because she needed someone strong enough to stop Harvey from f**king her”. The joke got negative attention from viewers and some of them even complained to Ofcom, The regulators of Channel 4 are aware of what Frankie said but they have taken into account the way in which Katie exposes her children to the media which doesn’t make her any better of a person.

The joke may have not of been appropriate for his audience and people watching at home which have made several complaints including Jordan herself. I’m writing this statement on Frankie’s behalf for any offence caused but he is also allowed to say what he wants to say because he is entitled to the freedom of speech. Also, equality is something we have to keep in mind and have to ask our selves what makes Harvey so special that no joke can be made about him? If we are all equal then Mr.Boyle has done no wrong.

Letter to the BBC (Lucy)

To whom this may concern,
I'm writing to you in reference to the recent episode of News Night featuring David Starkey.

In this episode he is stereotypical, rude and extremely raciest. I was very offended by what he said and I'm sure many others were too!
This was said on national television where a large number of people in the UK were viewing it, He says the black people are to blame for the commencing of the riots that occurred.

During the interview his arguments and comments were very racist which I felt was disgracefully for a man of his intellect,To blame Black Culture so freely and proudly and then have the cheek to say that "The whites have become black" when Dreda Say Mitchell brought up the argument of the White Public were also involved in the riotsThis suggest that black culture has negative influence on the white community.

The head of the Labour party and many other politicians have said that it is "racist" and has broken the race relations act 2000: all forms of racism, direct or indirect, physical or verbal abuse towards other races is against the law.

I feel that the reputation of News Night has been brought down for letting this happen and not doing anything about it and that David Starkey should be severely dealt with.
I hope that you understand the reasons for my complaint and you deal with it.

I would also like to mention that the BBC guide lines have been broken by showing this:
"1.1
Audiences are at the heart of everything we do.
We are committed to giving them high-quality, original and at times challenging output.  Creativity is the lifeblood of our organisation.
Equally, we must give our audiences content made to the highest editorial and ethical standards.  Their trust depends on it.
We must therefore balance our presumption of freedom of expression with our responsibilities, for example to respect privacy, to be fair, to avoid unjustifiable offence and to provide appropriate protection for our audiences from harm."
Thank you, Mahan.

Survey Evaluation (Lucy)

After looking at the results of the survey I can see that most people were aware of what happened to the News of the World and what they did. Most people were unhappy about what they did and wouldn't have liked it happening to them and there were few that didn't mind or were unaware of it or didn't know what happened. In general most people would agree that they didn't do a good thing and wouldn't like it happening to them.

However, most people weren't that aware of the details of story and it strikes me as an example where the media has blown up the importance of the story. People who aren't involved in either journalism or politics aren't that bothered by the phone hacking scandal. Young people in particular had very little interest in it despite the massive amount of coverage in newspapers and on TV.

Claymation Evalutation

Clay animation or claymation is one of many forms of stop motion animation. Each animated piece, either character or background is usually made of Plasticine clay.
For our animation we used Morph as inspiration and created our own unique characters and used 'iStopMotion' to take single frames of the clay figures.

We started off by getting a pice of plasticine and rolling it into a ball and then stretched it out to form a character then kept playing around with it till we were happy with it then added details to the figure then after we had made our story and created a story board we began to film using the stop motion program on the Mac to film the story frame by frame to form the final out come.

I was happy with the final out come but feel that it could have been better if we had spent more time on it and had made it a bit longer time but overall it came out good and got the story across and showed that we have learnt the basic skills for claymation and stop motion animation.

Morph is a animated plasticine stop-motion character who appeared with Tony Hart in 1977 on several of his UK TV programmes:Take Hart and HartbeatMorph was made for the BBC by Aardman Animations who later became famous for Wallace and Gromit. I think what makes Morph so significant to the success of Aardman is the fact that he's is simple but very cleverly created and made to fit into the storys which show the potential of claymation which opened more doors for them to go on and do bigger things like 'Chicken Run' and other successful Clay animated movies.

One of the strengths of claymation is that anyone can do it and theres no right way of making a character so its simple and can be done with just clay and a camera so not much equipment is needed, Another strength is that you can create almost anything basically your imagination is what limits you, Its a very simple proses so it can be done anywhere and unlike cut-out animation it doesn't have lots of bits of paper because its just clay you don't really have to worry about losing a pice or two.

The limitations of claymation are that it can be very time consuming to craft a very detailed character and keep him the same in each frame and you also might need to create clothes for it and other stuff, Another limitation is that it can get frustrating and fiddle at times which can be off putting for most also getting it into the position that you want can result in bits falling off or simply not staying where you want it to stay.

Claymation in comparison to other forms of animation I think is much better because you can do a lot more and even use real life objects in your work and it had very small limiting factors and it doesn't need many things to start so it can be done anywhere by anyone unlike cutout which needs lots of bits and bobs and hours of cutting magazines, sticking them into place, keeping all the bits together so they don't get lost and still it provides a very wide range of things that can be done which cant be done with a Zeetorpe. Although its hard to master and can be frustrating at times but I think its the best form of animation because its simple and easy and you can get much better results once you mastered it.

Cut Out Animation Evaluation

To make a cut out animation you first will need to make a story board and cut out your desired shapes/pics and arrange them according to your sortie, then start up iStopMotion and make sure your camera is hooked up and ready, when all that is done then you can begin by placing each picture in its place and press record then move the images but not too much to the next position and keep repeating this proses until you are finished.

The pioneers of the original cut out animation are Terry Gilliam and Lotte Reiniger. Terry Gilliam is known for his great work on the  Monty Python animations and Lotte Reiniger is known for his the Jack and the Beanstalk animation. Some examples of modern cut out animation would be: 'B.o.B - Nothing on you' which is a music videos made in the cut out style and 'South Park' which is a cartoon but started off as a cut out animation other good examples are:  Angela Anaconda,Charlie and Lola...

The positive side of cut out animation is that you can do a whole verity of things and are limited by your imagination so you can pretty much do anything and it will add a great unique effect, the negatives  about it are that its time consuming and you cant make the image come towards the viewer in a 3D way.

My animation went good and I'm happy with it because its smooth and get the story across, the thing I didn't like about it is that it took a bit of time and did get frustrating in bits also the camera was bad so the final product came out very blurry and rough so I would change that next time and also I'll try using bigger cut outs.

When I compare my work to one of Terry Gilliam or Lotte Reiniger I can see that I can pull off the basic concept but still need to try harder and have more patients in order to get it as good as theres that includes the story line.

Eadweard J. Muybridge

1 He changed his name more than his facial hair,His full real name was Edward James Muggeridge.
2 He was acquitted for the Murder of his wife’s lover.
3 He created two panoramas of San Francisco, one seventeen foot long.
4 Francis Bacon owned four copies of Humans in Motion.
5 Muybridge also documented a Baboon in motion.
6 He was born on April 9, 1830 in Kingston upon Thames, England.
7 He is known for his pioneering work on animal movement which used multiple cameras to capture motion.
8 He died on April 8, 1904 in Kingston upon Thames.
9 He was a photographer.
10 He made the Zoopraxiscope which showed motion.

Edward James Muggeridge was born on April 9, 1830 in Kingston upon Thames, England and He emigrated to the US, arriving in San Francisco in 1855, where he started a career as a publisher's agent and bookseller. He left San Francisco at the end of the 1850s, and after a stagecoach accident in which he received severe head injuries, returned to England for a few year and took up photography.

He reappeared in San Francisco in 1866 and rapidly became successful in photography, focusing principally on landscape and architectural subjects, He grew in the photography industry as one of the best and In 1872, former Governor of California Leland Stanford, a businessman and race-horse owner, had taken a position on a popularly-debated question of the day: whether all four of a horse's hooves are off the ground at the same time during the trot. Up until this time, most paintings of horses at full gallop showed the front legs extended forward and the hind legs extended to the rear. Stanford sided with this assertion, called "unsupported transit", and took it upon himself to prove it scientifically. Stanford sought out Muybridge and hired him to settle the question.

In later studies Muybridge used a series of large cameras that used glass plates placed in a line, each one being triggered by a thread as the horse passed. Later a clockwork device was used. The images were copied in the form of silhouettes onto a disc and viewed in a machine called a Zoopraxiscope. This in fact became an intermediate stage towards motion pictures or cinematography, one of the earliest forms of videography. And he killed his wife's lover but he was freed because he had mental problems. He on April 8, 1904 in Kingston upon Thames.

Ident compering

I have been set the task to compare two idents by BBC1(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2QN8ff-a9o&feature=player_embedded) and BBC2(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTO8UIgFp2U&feature=player_embedded). Both of these indents are good in there own right and have meaning that is metaphorical shown that represents the channel and what its about, BBC1's ident shows a person in the rain riding a bike then it shows him being joined by other people and they all ride the same way and end up on a circle and the weather goes from rainy to sunny and shows the BBC1 logo, watching this ident says to me that when one person is alone other people will come along with you and the people are different colors that represents different races and it shows when we all come together it brightens up the day and makes the world go round because we are all together and bring color and sun to each of our lives which is what BBC1 wants to show it does; to show itself as a family channel because it shows programs for all ages and races. BBC2's ident shows a view of a futuristic world then zooms out to revile the BBC2 logo and shows the view was being shown with a zoetroupe, watching this indent says to me that BBC2 is a channel thats shows future programs but still keeps its old style because it shows programs about modern or future things but if mainly for a older audience and that its a channel that has come along way from when it was launched. Overall I think that both idents are great and have a good meaning behind them that describes the channel well but I like BBC1's indent more because I can relate to it more and my view may be like this because I am a youth but if I were older then I might have seen BBC2 differently but both channels have programs for a wide rang of audiences but they are split into different tribes.

Channel Indents

The Ident is the strongest visual representation of a channel. Channel Idents are little brand animations/logos clip shown on a channel in-between programs or breaks to show a little taster of the channel and what its style is and what the brand is based around for example E4 shows twin beds and toys and lots of random things happenin which are a bit young and child like which is the style of the channel. Another thing all the idents have in common are they all show the channels logo for example at the end it will show the SKY1 logo or the Channel 4 logo will form at the end and another thing is all of them have music but most of the time they wont have narration because it can clash with the audio from the continuity announcer for example the Sky1 ident has no voice over most of the time but there are times in which they want to say whats on next and you will hear narration. The people that are in charge of the idents are the marketing department, they choose what is shown and what can represent the channel and what they think will get in more viewers for example they will use a ident that uses characters from a program to keep the viewer wanting to find out what happens because they like that show a good example is channel 4 they use a indent of homer from the simpsons which is a big show for them and he's is trying to drink beer but then it ends up on the power cable and when he tries to drink it he gets shocked and then the camera zooms out to show the city and in the grids you can see the 4 logo flashing, this is effective because its funny, entertaining and keeps the viewer on the channel until the next program or it will inform them of another program they might like on another channel that belongs to the brand to keep the viewer on there set of channels/media so they are in more of our homes. (Channel logo Music Animation No narration - can get mixed up with audio so it would clash Channel representation - Taste of the channel)

In video editing pros and cons...

In video editing is when you film the shots you want but you don't do any editing to them so if you want to tell a story then you will have to shoot everything in sequence of how the story goes, an example of this would be most films shot in the early 1900's which didn't have any editing and where all shot on one camera so all the filming and different shots had to be done on location and if something messed up then they would have to do it again.

Pros:

  • Not much editing involved
  • All work can be shown asa filming is done
  • Just one camera was enough, no need to carry lots of equipment
  • Cost less

Cons:

  • If some thing goes wrong then you would have to start again
  • Very limited to how much or what angels you can film a event
  • Whats filmed cant be changed
  • Not much variety because there wont be many effects
  • If you lose/damage the film you would have to film again
So over all I think in video editing has its uses but can be limiting to what you can do.

Intro to Editing (16.1.1)

Editing: The Invisible Art

• How can editing build tension and pace?:By using music and many different shots getting faster towards the end of the scene mainly using both music and cutting and can be very effective and changing the frequency throughout the scene.

• What is crosscutting?:Cutting from 1 person to another to compare there progress and then show the audience to show a reaction shot these can be made up of different shots from XCU to LS.

• What are reaction shots?:Reaction shots are shots used to show the reaction of a audience/spectators of a event in which the character is doing someone e.g. he's racing up a hill and nearly falls and then cuts to show the audience's reaction.

• What is seamless editing? Its when the audience is caught up in the action that they don't notice the editing and shot cutting and automatically fill in the gaps because the audience is used to the situation.

• What is a jump cut?:When its jumps from one part of the scene to another part but staying to the same scene but cutting out sections at a time which can how a great effect when its used properly e.g. when the person is talking and you can jump to a shot of them thinking then jump to a shot of them answering.

• What is a flash back and what does it achieve?:A flash back is when the person is reminded of something in the past that had happened and the scene will cut to the flash back to show that memory or event, it can be used to achieve a back story to a person or situation which will help the audience get a better understanding of whats going on e.g. in Sweeny Todd it starts off by Sweeny in London and he starts telling the story of why he hates London and as he is doing so it shows flash backs which help the audience get a better understanding of what happened before and why he feels the way he does.

• How can editing be used poetically?:It makes the audience think which makes it a active viewing which makes the audience try to work out the relationship between the things shown or situation.
